Rick Springfield took the stage at Charlotte Metro Credit Union Amphitheatre in Charlotte, North Carolina, on August 26, 2016, just three days after celebrating his 67th birthday.
And apparently, 67 had never heard the phrase “slow down.”
Springfield delivered the kind of energetic performance that has made him an enduring live draw, bringing decades of hits, plenty of personality and the unmistakable rock-star presence that has followed him from “Jessie’s Girl” and Working Class Dog through a career that has stretched well beyond his 1980s pop-culture explosion.
But on this particular night, there was another topic getting plenty of attention.
At 67 years old, Springfield hit the stage shirtless — and looking remarkably fit while doing it.
The moment was certainly good for a few double takes, but Springfield’s longevity has always been about more than appearances. He has continued recording, touring and performing rather than simply living off the nostalgia attached to his biggest hits. Onstage in Charlotte, the energy matched the image: this wasn’t an artist quietly easing into the legacy-act portion of his career.
Springfield was joined on the bill by Night Ranger and The Romantics, making the night a heavy dose of rock-and-roll nostalgia without feeling particularly nostalgic once the music started.
And while plenty has changed since “Jessie’s Girl” first made Rick Springfield a household name, one thing was pretty obvious in Charlotte:
67 looked pretty damn good on him.
