On September 1, 2026, Alex Van Halen was knighted in his birthplace of Nijmegen, Netherlands, receiving one of the country’s highest civilian honors for his monumental contributions to global music.
At 73 years old, the co-founder and powerhouse drummer of Van Halen was appointed a Knight in the Order of the Netherlands Lion (Ridder in de Orde van de Nederlandse Leeuw). The royal decoration was presented on behalf of King Willem-Alexander by Nijmegen Mayor Hubert Bruls. Held at the historic Berchmanianum building at Radboud University, the intimate ceremony recognized Van Halen’s lifetime achievement in the arts.
